[comp.unix.ultrix] DECstation 3100 problem with ugen1.31

I am attempting to compile mpla, part of the 1986 UCB VLSI tools.

# make
cc -I.. -g -c mpla.c
Fatal error in: /usr/lib/ugen1.31 Segmentation fault - core dumped
*** Error code 1

Stop.

anyone got any ideas? the only listed problem with ugen I can see is 
for /tmp full.
