I was told the largest hard drive that Ultrix could handle was DEC's RX55 (a 300M +) drive. Is it possible to use something larger, say Maxtor's 760M drives? This is for a DecStation 3100, VAXstation 3100, 3200 if that makes any difference. thanks, mark -- edwards@vms.macc.wisc.edu UW-Madison, 1210 West Dayton St., Madison WI 53706

I'm currently using a 730Mb Wren V, and Ultrix is very happy with it. So, yes, you can probably use the 760Mb drive.

We have just ordered a third Wren V and are trying to get our greedy little hands on one of the new Imprimis Elite disks (1.5G) for testing purposes. They advertise a 300+MB disk for around $3,400, a 600+MB disk for around $4,000, a 1.2GB disk for $6,500, and a 2.4GB disk for $???. However, he said that Ultrix 3.1 and lower would only use a ~100MB disk or a ~300MB disk as a boot device. Apparently it checks the number of cylinders and all that hardware stuff. He said after that the other disks worked fine. In fact, they sell a combo called the DataStation 1000 which includes a 300+MB disk (to boot from) and a 600+MB disk in one package. Our only drive in our VAXstation 3200 is a Maxtor XT8760E (760 MBytes unformatted) with a Dilog controller. When I installed Ultrix 3.0, it identified the drive as an RA80. I agonized over this for a while, finally deciding to let the installation continue. I ended up with an RA80 with 1,271,400 sectors, instead of the "standard" 237,213. So, with the default partition table, partitions c, f, and h are longer. It's been working fine for a couple of months now...
