I have the feeling that this is a stupid question, but does a DECstation 2100 run the *exact* same binaries (including the kernel!) as a DECstation 3100? Is there any followon Ultrix patch release needed for a 2100? Now that our DECstation Ultrix sources are in, I'd hate to buy a passel of machines for which the sources might be somewhat useless, especially since it's kernel hacking I'm the most worried about. It seems to me that everything (again, including the kernel!) should be 100% the same, since the machine is just a 3100 running at a slower clock rate and with slower memory. Still, I could be wrong... -Steve Spoken: Steve Miller Domain: steve@umiacs.umd.edu UUCP: uunet!mimsy!steve Phone: +1-301-454-1808 USPS: UMIACS, Univ. of Maryland, College Park, MD 20742

Its the same kind of question that, if not asked, could lead to some real 'gotchas.' Information that I have been given is that the DS2100 and DS3100 share the identical machine instruction set as well as processor (identical architectures). If this is true, then the binaries are interchangable. Bob Kinne Optoelectronics Computing Center UCB, Campus Box 525 VOICE (303) 492-3330 Boulder, CO 80309 INTERNET bobk@boulder.Colorado.EDU

The other day, I moved my system disk (RZ55) from my DECstation 2100 and hooked it up to a co-worker's DECstation 3100, and successfully booted the system off the RZ55. My group has been using DECStation 3100's and 2100's with the same software for several weeks with no problems. The only problems I've run into had to do with color tubes vs monochrome tubes, not 3100 vs 2100. -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Bruce Schuchardt Ph: (503) 629-8383 Servio Logic bruce@servio.SLC.COM Beaverton, OR uunet!servio!bruce
