[comp.unix.ultrix] 2.3->3.0 upgrade from 2.3 server

lyndon@cs.AthabascaU.CA (Lyndon Nerenberg) (10/27/89)

I have a VS2000 running 2.3 that I would like to upgrade to 3.1.
The machine has an RZ53, but no local tapedrive. Since we have
a 785 running 2.3 I thought to myself: "no problem, I'll load the
stuff from the 785 tapedrive using setld."

Running "setld -l auvax:" as per the doc give a failure message (the
device name for the remote tape gets messed up). Running again using
"setld -l auvax:/dev/rmt0h" works fine until it's time to start
skipping over files, at which time the setld on the VS2000 tries
to execute "mt fsf 1" and such on the (non-existant) local tape
drive, rather than the remote ...

Anyway, after five hours of getting ever increasingly pissed off, I
gave up and went home. Having slept on it, and after re-reading the
installation doc's, I'm almost convinced that (short of extracting
the dumpsets and doing the whole thing by hand) the only way I'm
going to be able to upgrade this machine is to buy a local tape for
it.

Do any of you have any suggestions on how something like this can
be accomplished? The documentation I've gone through is extremely
silent about installing clients, either diskfull or diskless ...
(I get the feeling we might have been short-shipped on some of the
doc. If you have pointers to the Ultrix doc, please include the
manual name and part number so I can make sure we received it.)
