[comp.unix.ultrix] 'using inetd on an 8800 with 3.0' help needed

gilgut@cg-atla.UUCP (S. P. Gilgut) (11/10/89)

I am stuck, and no one here seems to be able to help.
Due to a stroke of luck, the computer center acquired a bunch
of Sun clients and a server (this really is about Ultrix...read on...)
which we have as workstations (next to free). They have these cute
performance meters on them. I decided to port rpc.rstatd from the
sun onto the big monster VAX 8-) so I could watch the load, and cpus
at a glance.

In debug mode (running the daemon from a terminal) it runs fine, and 3
workstations are running the meters. It does die now and again for
various reasons, but the problem is that when I compile it without
debug mode, and ask inetd to start it, it doesn't. I know my VAX
doesn't particularly like Suns, but inetd doesn't say a word. Nada in syslog
or the uerf errlog.

Here's the technical data:
from /etc/services:

rpc.rstatd	100001/udp	/usr/etc/rpc.rstatd	# rstat daemon

from /etc/inetd.conf:

rpc.rstatd	dgram	udp	wait	/usr/etc/rpc.rstatd	rpc.rstatd

Maybe I am only missing something? Documentation? We don't need no
documentation.....
Anyway, if anyone has a 'spell' to invoke this daemon, I would appreciate
it a lot if you could mail it to me.
...!uunet!samsung!cg-atla!gilgut should do it.
