[comp.unix.ultrix] Attaching a modem to a VAXstation 3100

ct@mit-caf.MIT.EDU (Curtis Tsai) (12/15/89)

I'm experiencing problems with hooking a modem up to a VAXstation 3100
Model 30 to allow dialups.

I'm using a MMJ to 25pin female connector (DEC part H8571-A) and a BC16E
cable to connect the communications port of the VAXstation to a Supra
2400 baud modem which supports AT command set. The force DSR on
attribute was turned off for the modem, as specified by the VAXstation
3100 manual.

On the software end, I modified the following line to the /etc/ttys file:

	tty02 "/etc/getty H2400" dialup	on	modem

Then I issued a hangup signal to init as root and examining the
processes showed that getty was indeed running.

Upon dialing up with a PC, the VAXstation modem would connect but the
login prompt would not appear on the PC. In addition, the TR light on
the VAXstation modem did not come on. I tried setting the force DSR
to always on but that did not work either.

Am I doing something wrong? I would like to use a cheaper modem but
if it can't be done, will I have to purchase a DF242 Scholar Plus
modem at $709?

Thanks for you help.

Send me email or post on the net whatever you prefer.
