Thank you to everyone who responded to my cry for help. Nancy Johnson Burr (burr@aspen.cs.washington.edu) pointed out an error in the Ultrix 2.0 file /usr/src/sys/vaxif/if_in.c and suggested a fix. It worked, and we are no longer plagued by (get this) 60,000 error messages per hour! Thanks also to Fred Avolio, George Robbins, Ted Lemon, and Al Michielsen for their helpful suggestions. While trying to solve this problem, I called DEC Field Service. After being bounced from Field Service to the Remote Diagnostic Service in Colorado, to a helpful person Ultrix person in Colorado, to a specialist in Atlanta, and then back to our local DEC software services department, I was very frustrated. Nobody had a solution, except to say that "Ultrix 2.0 has been `retired'" (that is, it's no longer supported). It's great to have all you helpful people on the Net in times of need!
