[comp.unix.ultrix] changing protections on /tmp,/usr/tmp

grr@cbmvax.commodore.com (George Robbins) (02/20/90)

When someone brought this up while ago, there was one thing I forgot to mention.

restore(8) has a bit of a problem with changing the protections of parent
directories when you do a restore into some directory.

For example if I want to get some files off an archive tape and restore a
sub-tree to /usr/tmp (or /tmp),the protection (and probably ownership, etc)
for /usr/tmp gets changed to whatever was on the dump tape for the protection
of the parent directory of what you were trying to restore.

This is probably due to incorrect handling of the .. entries in the directorys
being restored, but I haven't investitaged in detail. It's still wrong in
Ultrix 3.1C, I'm not sure about 4.3.
