[comp.unix.ultrix] UWS

tml@hemuli.tik.vtt.fi (Tor Lillqvist) (03/06/90)

I recently inherited the job of administering a microvaxII running
Ultrix. When upgrading to Ultrix 3.1 I noticed that the tape also
contained the UWS 2.1 upgrade. Using mt, dd, zcat and tar, I unpacked
also these filesets (I guess setld wouldn't have done it, as we don't
have the corresponding UWS 2.0 software, yes?). The microvax is no
workstation, of course, but we have a bunch of other workstations
running X here.

Is UWS a part of Ultrix, but not distributed to customers who don't
have workstations? Is it a separately sold product? Is it OK to use
these nifty X clients (dxcalendar in particular looks interesting)
that DEC put on the update tape?

UWS is a product that is made of two parts:

	o ULTRIX (the base system)
	o Graphic components:

		- libraries
		- clients
		- window managers

UWS is sold as a single product, but for people who wish to use the graphic
components on their timesharing machine (for display upon X-terminals
or to other workstations over the network) we sell a server license and kit.

Since you already have the components, you need only buy the server license.

Certain of the hardware machines (particularly the newer RISC and VAX server
systems such as the DECsystem 3100) have already had the server license bundled
in. The MicroVAX II timesharing machine (alas) did not.
