I would like to know if there is any interest in starting a news group dedicated to the discussion of biological issues. As *most* of us have some facility with computers and computing, I would like to see the news group include discussion of the computing end of biological research: statistics; biological simulation; computing and ''biotechnology''; etc. Of course, other topics would be welcome. Feel free to comment in net.news.group, or send your comments to ...!decvax!duke!unc!ecsvax!emigh. Ted H. Emigh/Departments of Genetics and Statistics/NCSU/Raleigh NC

I vote "yes". There have already been some spontaneous biological discussions which started up in peculiar and inappropriate newsgroups. I am thinking, for example, of the "common female ancestor" discussion which went on in net.roots, net.women and several other groups and the (rather silly, in my opinion) "what is natural?" debate in net.religion. I'm sure there were people on the net who would have found the discussions interesting but either didn't read the newsgroups in which they occurred or felt inhibited by the tone of the groups. (It's rather hard to have a reasonable exploration of non-human sexual behavior or the reactions of rats to stress in the middle of a tirade about gays burning in hell, for instance.) ---- Prentiss Riddle {ihnp4,seismo,ctvax}!ut-sally!riddle riddle@ut-sally.UUCP

************************************************************************** I vote for net.biology. I already had to ask a question on evolution & the only place I could find was net.physics--it was also a response to one item in a debate about creationism vs. evolution going on in net.physics at the time. That's part of what net.misc is for.
