[comp.unix.ultrix] Strange behaviour on DECstation 5000/200

iglesias@orion.oac.uci.edu (Mike Iglesias) (06/05/90)

We have a new DECstation 5000/200 running Ultrix v3.1D (rev 54). It
currently has 8mb of memory and an RZ55 disk. Sometimes, when we
do a man command (among others), the process appears to hang - the
man command generates no output, the echo has been turned off, but
you can get control back by typing ^C. The system is running
fine during this time - other people can do things. We've also seen
this behaviour when logging in - people get the motd and then nothing.
They're stuck at that point, and have to try to log in again (which
sometimes works). We've checked some obvious things - disk space
(plenty), memory (ok from what we can see via vmstat), etc.

This system is getting it's user disk space off of a DECstation 3100
running Ultrix 3.1 (via NFS), if that makes any difference.

If anyone has any bright ideas on how to clear this up, I'd appreciate
hearing them!
