I have received lots of responses to this question, and I'll try
to summarize.

Several people suggested to duplicate the X-tree and DEC's, and
use a symbolic link to switch between windowing systems. The
directories involved are:

	/usr/include/X11
	/usr/bin/X11
	/usr/lib/X11

One could set up /usr/include/X11-DEC and /usr/include/X11-MIT,
and link /usr/include/X11 to one of them etc..

Most people agreed that most of the programs did co-exists.
However, the following exceptions were noted:

 - X11R4 tools will function under the DECwindows server (which
is based on X11R3). Of course, tools that make use of the SHAPE
   extensions won't work.
 - some DECwindows clients (dxcalendar, but some say: all of
them) dump core when used under the X11R4 server.
 - DXPsView will NOT function under the X11R4 server since it
uses the Display PostScript enhancements in the DECwindows server.
 - a "fonts.alias" file is needed to run DECwindows clients under
X11R4. It maps the DECwindows fontnames to X11 names. This file
has been posted to comp.windows.x some time ago, and may be
requested from Peter Vatne <vatne@star.dec.com> .
 - X11R4 xterm windows always start up as a 1x1 window under the R3 server.

Cimarron Taylor <cimarron@postgres.berkeley.edu> has kept a
notebook of the installation process. If you would like them, just ask him.

Some X11R4 tools have the filenames hardcoded instead of using
the names supplied by the make scripts. Larry Parmelee
<parmelee@wayback> has a patch to these scripts to correct this.

Thanks all of you for your extensive responses!
