Feel good about it. I spent 4 weeks calling DEC about missing H-kits for our two ds2100s; today I got a set of *bootleg* tk50's. From DEC, so it's legal, but they are copies - of (wait for it :-) ultrix uws 2.0 risc (which I think is ultix 3.0) & ultrix 3.1 / uws 2.1 update risc and of course they are totally innocent of docs. I therefor get to do an install followed by an upgrade, whilst looking at my VAX ultrix 3.0 docs and reading between the lines. Should be a real interesting afternoon. Sigh. The salesdroid claimed that 4.0 would be shipping RSN and that they were holding my order up to `catch the wave'. Yeah, uh huh, right.

We were in the same boat about two weeks ago, then we started getting in about 2 completes sets of 4.0 every other day! We now have at least 10 sets for RISC, and 3-4 sets for VAX! I must say 4.0 seems fairly nice so far. I have installed it on a VAXstation 3100, DECsystem 5000, 2 DECstation 5000, DECsystem 5820, and 8 DECstation 3100's. Although the 5820 with two processors screams, the DECstation 5000 is probably nicer if you don't need/use both cpu's at once. Here is a simple benchmark of compiling a String library, using AT&T's C++ 2.0 translator on various platforms. The library consisted of 36 different C++ files which were placed in a library using ar. We received Ultrix 4.0/UWS 4.0 _with manuals_ over a period covering the end of last week (it came in in bits and pieces). I was pretty pleased with the manuals, they finally got rid of those odd sized binders. --- Michael R.
