[comp.unix.ultrix] DECwindows and .Xdefaults

morse@quark.mpr.ca (Daryl Morse) (09/13/90)

I am running Ultrix V3.1D Worksystem V2.2 and using DECwindows. I have
encountered a problem with the way that dxsession stores customization
settings in .Xdefaults. As you are already aware, dxsession doesn't
provide menu access for customizing many of its resources, or for a
great number of basic X resources. DEC acknowledges this fact in the
UWS manual for Ultrix V4.0 by providing an entire chapter on
customizing DECwindows via .Xdefaults.

The problem that I am encountering is that dxsession wipes out the
entries in the old .Xdefaults that it doesn't know about (ie. The
customizations that DEC admits are necessary.), rather than merging
its changes into the existing file. Am I doing something wrong, or is
this a known problem with dxsession? If I want to customize my
environment using .Xdefaults, must I avoid using the menu to save the
changes?

In the unsupported section of the manual, there is a description of
xrdb. While I haven't had a chance to try it out yet, the manual seems
to imply that xrdb is smart enough to edit modifications into existing
defaults files. Does it work as advertised? Does dxsession use xrdb to
store customization settings, or does it have some other, less
sophisticated mechanism?

If you have encountered this problem, and/or know of solutions to it,
I would be most grateful to hear from you. Please respond via email.
If there seems to be sufficient interest in this topic, I will
summarize and re-post the replies.

Thanks.
