I recently installed Ultrix V.4 on my DECstation 3100 and found the following odd behaviour with lpr (or maybe I just never noticed it earlier.) All the printers that this machine knows about are remote printers on a VAX780 running VMS. We have installed Multinet on the 780 to provide the printer support for the DECstation. When I sign on to the DECstation as Joe/Jane User and lpr something to these printers everything works fine and the stuff appears where its supposed to. Issuing the lpq command also correctly displays the contents of the VMS printer queues. However when i'm logged in as root and do the same thing absolutely nothing appears on the printers; examination of the usr/spool/lpd directories seems to indicate that no cf.. or df.. files ever get created. Have I missed something obvious or isn't root allowed to print stuff to remote printers? Tony Willis
