Folks, Here's a question. If I use the bare console on the DECstation 3100 (foregoing the pleasures of the ever-helpful DEC window manager), what should my term type be? I've tried all the obvious ones, none of which work. To reduce clutter, please mail me the answer and I'll post it. You can do a "stty crt" to get "crt backspace" instead of the \/\/\/\ stuff. Be warned that it normally operates in "scrolling" mode, and appears to do the bitmap bashing at interrupt level, which will cause serial overruns if you are using the modem port. It would be nice if someone would write a new "console driver" that would layer on the equivlant of the standard Sun "console" capabilities. If you need windows, fine, but otherwise the "cost" of running the window environment is pretty stiff. We have one that we use for PCB layout - we use a standard VT100 clone attached to the printer port as the "user terminal/console" and use the standard X-pieces to drive the display as an application driven frame buffer. The DECwindows user session manager and company just suck up resources, when using Xcfb, twm and maybe and xterm get the job done fine... -- George Robbins - now working for, uucp: {uunet|pyramid|rutgers}!cbmvax!grr but no way officially representing: domain: grr@cbmvax.commodore.com Commodore, Engineering Department phone: 215-431-9349 (only by moonlite)
