I wrote an application program a few years ago that opens device files (/dev/ttyxx's) and communicates with some primitive data collection boxes via LADS lines. Now that my VAX will finnally get moved to our corporate compus it looks like I'll be able to connect to ethernet. It would be nice if, at the same time, I connect my magic boxes to terminal servers and do away with the LADS lines that currently connect my VAX with each of our other buildings. I am totally unfamiliar with the ethernet environment but I have been told that I could probably connect my boxes to ports on terminal servers and operate those ports in "reverse LAT" mode. If that is true (and I hope it is), my next problem is figuring out how to change my application program so it can communicate with this type of port. Hopefully, each of the terminal servers would be serviced by my VAX and I could simply change device filenames in my application's source code (Is that correct ?). It is very likely howerver, that some of this ports will be on terminal servers serviced by other hosts. I am currently using ULTRIX 3.2, soon to install 4.0 on a VAX 11/750. My intent is to write portable code so I can more easily replace the VAX. Any help, ideas, etc will be greatly welcomed.
