I've recently installed several DS5000 workstations as BIND/Hesiod clients of a DS5000 server. The passwd command seemed to work fine for me, but a problem developed when a user tried to change his password. After reporting that his "distributed password" had been changed, passwd refused further changes. Attempting to use the new password revealed that it had been incorrectly updated. Looking at /var/dss/namedb/passwd.db and /var/dss/namedb/src/passwd showed that the encrypted password field in both files had a section of the user's "real name" field appended to it. The "real name" field had part of the encrypted password in it as well. It seemed to me unlikely that this could be the result of the encryption algorithm alone! Other random facts: I am running yp (yecch!) on a couple of clients so I have the /var/dss/namedb/src files linked to the /etc/yp/src files. That is, the "real" files are in /var/dss/namedb/src. Does this ring a bell with anyone? Please reply to me via email. I'll summarize to this group if the answer isn't too embarrasing. 8-) -- Howard Owen, Computer Systems Manager internet: hbo@sbphy.ucsb.edu Physics Computer Services BITNET: HBO@VOODOO.BITNET University of California, Santa Barbara HEPNET/SPAN: VOODOO::HBO "I am not a pay TV service!" 805-893-8366 (work)
