well, well, well... I knew there was a reason I hated ultrix. I am TRYING to install Ultrix 4.0 on a Dec 3100 and I want to use it in our BSD environment... This is almost the end of 1990 and DEC still hasn't figured out that there is a new/better way to deal with syslog. I would REALLY like to run the 4.3 syslogd rather than the trashy 4.2 version shipped with ultrix. At this point, I can arbitrarily start up one or the other and have it work. But if I just run the 4.3 syslogd, then I don't get any of the syslog() calls logged from programs like /etc/shutdown and other insigificant things like that. If I run the 4.2 syslog, then I can't log to my loghost. It's SOOOOOO convenient to be able to log to one central host that I just can't live without it. So, is there a way to get these two parties to live together in harmony? Of course they both want to open the same port and they both do different things with it... Has anyone else dealt with this sort of thing? No, we don't have source, that would be too easy. I guess what I'm really looking for a syslogd that will accept both 4.2 and 4.3 style syslog() calls and deal with them like a 4.3 syslogd would. Does such an animal exist? Please respond via e-mail and I will summarize my findings. thanks in advance +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Jeff Nieusma Logical: nieusma@boulder.colorado.edu | | System Administrator/Programmer Audible: (303) 492-0677 | | Computer Science Department Physical: Campus Box 430 | | University of Colorado Boulder, CO 80309-0430 | +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Work exists only to make play more fun, so if play is fun enough, why work? | +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+
