Well, a while ago I sent out a message bitching about DEC's brain damages syslog. I asked if anyone had come up with a way to use the BSD 4.3 syslogger. Since I got almost no replies, I took matters into my own hands and came up with a plan. Since all the important ultrix stuff gets logged with elcd (which is another story altogether), I fugured the syslog facility wasn't being used anyway. So I just ripped it out and put in the 4.3 syslog stuff. I feel so much better now. Here is most of the message I sent to our sys admin folks here: ----------- Forwarded Message --------------- while setting up ultrix 4.0, I made some pretty significant changes: 1. I replaced syslog.o in libc.a so it is now the BSD 4.3 version the man pages for syslog(3) and syslogd(8) reflect this. 2. the old stuff is in /usr/lib/libold_syslog.a and old_syslog(3) and old_syslog(8) 3. replaced the /etc/syslog.conf file with our 4.3 version 4. installed /usr/ucb/logger and man page 5. recompiled /bin/su so it will use the 4.3 syslogger 6. installed sendmail 5.64+IDA and it uses the 4.3 syslogger -------------------- EOM ---------------------- Does anyone know of anything that's gonna break or anything that I missed? Please let me know... Many thanks to the few people who did respond to my plea: Steven M. Schultz <sms@LONEX.RADC.AF.MIL> said: yeah, it does seem that each release tends to break more than it fixes, eh ;-) anders@ifi.uio.no said: Please do talk to your dec person. File a SWR. Maybe if enough of us does this... Btw: We have filed a SWR stating that we want 4.3 syslog instead of this elcsd/uerf thing. Not that I think this will help, but at least we tried. Paul Killey <paul@caen.engin.umich.edu> said [paraphrazed]: We run the 4.3 syslogd and don't bother running the 4.2 syslog. thanks for letting me waste your bandwidth... +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Jeff Nieusma Logical: nieusma@boulder.colorado.edu | | System Administrator/Programmer Audible: (303) 492-0677 | | Computer Science Department Physical: Campus Box 430 | | University of Colorado Boulder, CO 80309-0430 | +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Work exists only to make play more fun, so if play is fun enough, why work? | +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+
