Less than a hour after I announced to my user community that I would be installing ULTRIX 4.0 this weekend, a neighboring sysadmin told me he had already done so and found it really buggy - so bad he had to reboot every two days just to keep it up. Since I haven't been reading this newsgroup regularly, I don't have a feel for the general experience of other USENET sysadmins with 4.0. Please post or email any advice you have based on your recent installation of ULTRIX 4.0. I'll watch this newsgroup like a hawk for the next couple of days. By the way, I'm running a VAX 8800 with ULTRIX 3.0 at present. Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide. Did he install the mandatory upgrade also ? I don't know if you'll believe someone from DEC :), but I've been running 4.0 without any trouble since it came out, and it works just fine. mjr. -- "When choosing between two evils, give preference to the council of your tummy over that of your testes. Of course, you may want to wait for the 4.1 release, considering that it is a full upgrade at the moment. I'm going to stay with 4.0 until either a patch tape comes out or there's a serious reason for doing a complete reinstall. -- Karl -- Karl A. NOTE TO DEC PEOPLE READING THIS: I in no way mean to implicate that the problems arise thru faulty software, though I do not dismiss the possibility. More than likely, I have a setup that is in some way non-standard. -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bill Roth, University of Wisconsin Physical Sciences Laboratory email: bill@pslu1.psl.wisc.edu bill@wiscpsl.bitnet / (608)-873-6651
