[comp.unix.ultrix] RDAT first impressions addendum

terry@venus.sunquest.com (Terry R. Friedrichsen) (11/30/90)

I neglected to mention that the patch included with DEC's 4mm DAT tape drive
applies to Ultrix 4.1 and purports to fix a problem with multivolume dump/
restore. The tapes get written correctly, but without the patch, restore
stops at the end of the first volume.

It occurs to me that I should also have been much more emphatic about the
fact that the RDAT is NOT supported by DEC until Ultrix 4.1. I got it
to work (apparently) under Ultrix 4.0, but there are evidently hidden
problems which Ultrix 4.1 fixes. What EXACTLY doesn't work in Ultrix 4.0
is the kind of information that DEC doesn't usually release.

I am still testing the drive; I consider using it under Ultrix 4.0 to be
"at my own risk" until I'm running the supported software. I do not intend
to use it for production backups before then. If you try this, you should
adopt the same attitude.
