[comp.unix.ultrix] Ultrix 4.0 install, NFS case-sensitive? whereis :0.0?

lau@desci.wharton.upenn.edu (Yan K. Lau) (12/01/90)

I just installed Ultrix 4.0 from CD onto a DECstation 5000 model 200.
Our other machines (model 3100's, 2100's) are running UWS 2.1.
Since the 5000 only has one disk on which the operating system was
installed, I NFS mounted the large /usr/users filesystem from the
3100 onto the 5000.

However, it took me a couple of days to figure out the "access denied"
messages that I was getting were because NFS appears to be case sensitive.
We are using BIND to a campus-wide name server that appears to return
names in all uppercase. So, is NFS supposed to be case sensitive or is
it some other system feature?

I also ran into a problem when I first logged in to the 5000 in that it
complained and could not start up a DECterm window (remember, I am using
the .Xdefaults from the /usr/users I NFS mounted). I think it said that
it did not know about (maybe can't access?) display :0.0. I was able to
fix the problem by going into the customize security menu and adding the
name of the 5000 machine to the list. This seems very odd. I was not
able to add some machine names (maybe because they're not in my mini
/etc/hosts file?) Did I miss something in the installation? The 3100's
using the same .Xdefaults doesn't have this problem.

Another thing is that there is no /etc/X0.hosts file so the access
to the display is currently not restricted. If I make up the file,
how do I change access dynamically? The old version of the os had
the xhost command, I can't find this anywhere under Ultrix 4.0.
Did I overlook something in the installation?
