[comp.unix.ultrix] Automounter on Ultrix 4.0

fct@raybed2.msd.ray.com (FRED THOMPSON) (01/15/91)

We just started using our Ultrix 4.0 workstations. One thing we noticed
was the automounter. It looks interesting and I was wondering if people
could post examples of how they are using it (/etc/auto.master, etc.)
Also, are there any problems to watch for.

Thanks.

Gak. I tried using it and had all kinds of problems with things hanging. I'd
wait a revision or two. Perhaps you could look at amd. I think it's been
patched up to work with the DEC MIPS stuff.

If you insist on using Dec's automount, I recall reading somewhere that
stderr needs to be redirected somewhere. ie, just running 'automount'
in rc.local won't cut it, but typing automount at your terminal will.
At least i think I remember reading this somewhere in this group. Perhaps
somebody will verify it.

This is not true. There is a bug report (for 4.0 only!) and the
cause is any NFS error, timeout, etc. What has been stated before
is true; you must redirect stderr to somewhere or else NFS errors
will cause the automounter to hang.

	/usr/etc/automount 2> /dev/console

Solves the problem.
