[comp.unix.ultrix] Problem with last on Ultrix 4.1

andrew@triton.unm.edu (Andrew Eberhart) (01/21/91)

I am having problems with Ultrix 4.1 (X11R4) on my DEC 5000's.

login (or init, I'm not sure which) is not recording the users who
log into the console of the machines. It does not show any of the
xterms coming from console, either. Therefore, last is not too
useful since most of the logins into the machines is from the consoles.

I would appreciate it if someone could post or send me mail on how
to get console to start reporting to wtmp.

		Thanks,

The easiest way to deal with this is to modify the /usr/lib/xdm/Xstartup script
to add an entry to /var/adm/wtmp as well as modify the /usr/lib/xdm/Xreset
script to remove the entry from /var/adm/wtmp. In the R4 source tree there is
support for this in clients/xdm/sessreg.c which knows how to deal with both
BSD and SYSV wtmp files.
