Greetings, I would appreciate the advice and help of anyone who has information on how to connect a DEC LN03R ScriptPrinter or an LN03 to a DECsystem 3100 running 4.1. Configuration : (1) DECsystem 3100 running 4.1 (2) 3 DECstation 3100 clients. (3) 1 LN03R ScriptPrinter (4) 1 LN03 Laser Printer Problem: Some time back I tried to connect the LN03R to our setup and ran into major problems. I would like to have the DECsystem server handle all of the print queue processing for the 3 clients. The problem I have is that the console terminal is connected to the printer port of the server. I tried to configure the serial port for the printer but ran into problems with jobs being lost with an occasion job being printed out. I need to know the following : (1) Is it possible to set the printer up for the serial port ? If so how ?? (2) How can I set up the printer queueing so that it goes to just one machine for all of the clients. (3) Will a client (16mb) function as a print spool server reliably without effecting the performance too much. I would eventually like to have both printers working off of these systems. One connected to the server the other connected to a client. Any advice, help, horror stories (I can tell you one about this printer setup if interested), pointers would be appreciated. Use the 'rm' field in /etc/printcap or use the lprsetup command, and use the same entry for all clients. For example: # @(#)printcap 2.2 (ULTRIX) 4/12/89 lw50|ps|psc|lw|postscript printer in 50 :\ :lp=:\ :mx#0:\ :rm=remote_hostname:\ :rp=lw50:\ :sd=/usr/spool/lpd/lw50: |> (3) Will a client (16mb) function as a print spool server reliably without |> effecting the performance too much. I should think so. Lpd is pretty low overhead unless it's going constantly.
