We have been running a number of DEC machines at Ultrix 3.1 and have been successfully using rdump to backup the workstations' disks to an 8mm on a 3602 server. Recently, we began upgrading the workstations to Ultrix 4.1 (the server is planned for this weekend) and have experienced a number of dump failures on the 4.1 machines. For instance, a VAXStation 3100 was upgraded and rdump failed with a number of bread errors. The machine was shut down, brought up to single user, fsck run without noting any problems, and then brought to multiuser. Now, rdump runs normally. Three more machines (all of them are DECStation 2100s) now show similar problems following their upgrade to 4.1. On one of them, rdump still failed after the first sequence of shutdown/fsck/multiuser but rdump worked after a second shutdown sequence. Here's the output from rdump attempts on the root and usr partitions: -- Level 1 dump of partition /dev/rz1a of machine spanishoak produced the following output: DUMP: Date of this level 1 dump: Thu Feb 14 03:28:36 1991 DUMP: Date of last level 0 dump: the epoch DUMP: Dumping /dev/rz1a to /dev/nrmt0h on host elder DUMP: Mapping (Pass I) [regular files] DUMP: (This should not happen)bread from /dev/rz1a [block 34816]: count=8192, got=-1 DUMP: (This should not happen)bread from /dev/rz1a [block 34832]: count=8192, got=-1 DUMP: (This should not happen)bread from /dev/rz1a [block 34848]: count=8192, got=-1 DUMP: (This should not happen)bread from /dev/rz1a [block 34864]: count=8192, got=-1 DUMP: (This should not happen)bread from /dev/rz1a [block 34880]: count=8192, got=-1 DUMP: (This should not happen)bread from /dev/rz1a [block 34896]: count=8192, got=-1 DUMP: (This should not happen)bread from /dev/rz1a [block 34912]: count=8192, got=-1 DUMP: (This should not happen)bread from /dev/rz1a [block 34928]: count=8192, got=-1 DUMP: (This should not happen)bread from /dev/rz1a [block 34944]: count=8192, got=-1 DUMP: (This should not happen)bread from /dev/rz1a [block 34960]: count=8192, got=-1 DUMP: (This should not happen)bread from /dev/rz1a [block 34976]: count=8192, got=-1 DUMP: (This should not happen)bread from /dev/rz1a [block 34992]: count=8192, got=-1 DUMP: (This should not happen)bread from /dev/rz1a [block 35008]: count=8192, got=-1 DUMP: (This should not happen)bread from /dev/rz1a [block 35024]: count=8192, got=-1 DUMP: (This should not happen)bread from /dev/rz1a [block 35040]: count=8192, got=-1 DUMP: (This should not happen)bread from /dev/rz1a [block 35056]: count=8192, got=-1 DUMP: (This should not happen)bread from /dev/rz1a [block 35072]: count=8192, got=-1 DUMP: (This should not happen)bread from /dev/rz1a [block 35088]: count=8192, got=-1 DUMP: (This should not happen)bread from /dev/rz1a [block 35104]: count=8192, got=-1 DUMP: (This should not happen)bread from /dev/rz1a [block 35120]: count=8192, got=-1 DUMP: (This should not happen)bread from /dev/rz1a [block 35136]: count=8192, got=-1 DUMP: (This should not happen)bread from /dev/rz1a [block 35152]: count=8192, got=-1 DUMP: (This should not happen)bread from /dev/rz1a [block 35168]: count=8192, got=-1 DUMP: (This should not happen)bread from /dev/rz1a [block 35184]: count=8192, got=-1 DUMP: (This should not happen)bread from /dev/rz1a [block 35200]: count=8192, got=-1 DUMP: (This should not happen)bread from /dev/rz1a [block 35216]: count=8192, got=-1 DUMP: (This should not happen)bread from /dev/rz1a [block 35232]: count=8192, got=-1 DUMP: (This should not happen)bread from /dev/rz1a [block 35248]: count=8192, got=-1 DUMP: (This should not happen)bread from /dev/rz1a [block 35264]: count=8192, got=-1 DUMP: (This should not happen)bread from /dev/rz1a [block 35280]: count=8192, got=-1 DUMP: (This should not happen)bread from /dev/rz1a [block 35296]: count=8192, got=-1 DUMP: (This should not happen)bread from /dev/rz1a [block 35312]: count=8192, got=-1 DUMP: (This should not happen)bread from /dev/rz1a [block 43504]: count=8192, got=-1 DUMP: More than 32 block read errors from 2147467149 DUMP: This is an unrecoverable error.
