I brought down TeX3.0/LaTeX2.09 from labrea.stanford.edu, and built it on my DECstation 5000 running Ultrix 4.1. The build seemed to work fine, but when I try LaTeX'ing a file with some math symbols, I have all sorts of strange problems of the variety: Underfull \hbox (badness 10000) in paragraph at lines 63--83 \elvrm bot-tom, $\elvmi ^^\[]$ [1] [2] Underfull \hbox (badness 10000) in paragraph at lines 187--195 \elvrm 0\elvmi :\elvrm 003$ We built the same TeX/LaTeX package on a Sun-3, and everything is fine, so it's not my .tex file !!!!! Any help would be appreciated to the point of ecstasy. Rich Signell | rsignell@crusty.er.usgs.gov U.S. Geological Survey | (508) 548-8700 Quissett Campus | "You need a license to dig clams... Richard Signell reported a problem with TeX on a DECstation 5000 running Ultrix 4.1 --- the compilation was ok, but LaTeX had problems with math mode. I had similar problems in November building TeX on a DECstation 3100 under Ultrix 4.0. Various pieces of text in math mode simply disappeared. I sent mail to the maintainers of web2c, and got a reply from Karl Berry telling me that the version I had ftp'd from labrea.stanford.edu (version 5.0c) was obsolete. His suggestion was to "Get 5.8a from ics.uci.edu [128.195.1.1], in the directory TeX." Apparently the problem is due to a missing cast somewhere. I haven't done this --- I had already succeeded in building a working TeX on a machine running Ultrix 3.1 (with optimization), but Pierre MacKay sent me a message saying that he had built a working version with optimization on a beta-test version of 4.1. So the later release of the web2c stuff may solve Signell's problem as well. -- George Avrunin Department of Mathematics and Statistics avrunin@math.umass.edu Lederle Graduate Research Tower University of Massachusetts Amherst, MA 01003 (413) 545-4251
