[comp.unix.ultrix] Top program for Ultrix machines

braun@dri.com (Kral) (03/02/91)

A couple of weeks ago there was a brief discussion here concerning top, a
program which shows CPU usage interactively (shows constantly updated screen of
top n cpu users). The main discussion was that it seemed to have broken under
Ultrix 4.x (as several kernel variables changed at that time).

I have since received an updated version of top from Robert Evans at the
University of Wales. I was able to compile and go with only minor
customization of the Makefile. Here is his README file:

>
> Amended to
> 1) use ultrix window sizing
> 2)	display each processor separately
> 3)	some fixes to type casting in cpu calculations and
> references to include files.
> 4)	Makefile localised.
>
> Tested on
> 1)	VAX 8350 running Ultrix 4.0
> 2)	RISC/VAX 5830 running Ultrix 4.0
> 3)	MicroVax II running Ultrix 3.0
> 4)	Sun SPARCServer 330 running SunOS 4.1
> 5)	Sun SPARCIPC running SunOS 4.1
> 6)	Sun 3/{160,150,60,50,80} running SunOS 4.1

and I can now add:
  7)	Microvax 3100 running Ultrix 4.1

I can't speak for Robert's willingness to uucp this stuff to anybody, but
I can probably do that for a reasonable number of requests. Ftp should be
available from Robert, but you'll have to ask him. He kindly granted me
permission to post this.

The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds new
discoveries, is not "Eureka!" (I found it!) but "That's funny ..."
