[comp.unix.ultrix] Problem with 'ccr'

larryd%bnrmtl@larry.mcrcim.mcgill.edu (Larry Dunkelman) (02/27/91)

I am attempting to access the remote console of a DEC server 200
which is remote from the host (in another building - the buildings
are interconnected with 1.544Mb/sec links using Vitalink bridges).

I have defined the terminal server (address, etc) using 'addnode'
and I use the 'ccr' command. After getting the 'remote console reserved'
message, I feel like I am talking to the moon. It takes upwards of 20
seconds to respond to my typing. But after it echos what I typed, it
responds normally. For example, I type : show server char . I see nothing
on my screen for about 20 seconds, then it slowly starts to appear, and
then it dumps the server characteristics quite quickly.

I have tried the same thing from an adjacent VMS machine using
NCP and 'connect via qna-0 phy address 08-00-2b-......' On VMS
it works fine with no response problems at all.

I am running a 5820 with Ultrix 4.0. When I tried this with Ultrix 3.1
(a while back) it would hang altogether. Connecting with a DS200
on the same 10Mb/sec LAN works like a charm.

DEC support were no help. They didn't have any terminal servers on
a WAN with which they could test.

Anyone have similar problems ? Am I doomed to use VMS to access my
remote servers forever ?

I have also experienced this, but not to the extent that you
say. Many of my commands execute immediately, but sometimes I must wait
10-20 seconds to see my typing echo.
