[comp.unix.ultrix] Gigabyte disks and Ultrix

iglesias@draco.acs.uci.edu (Mike Iglesias) (03/06/91)

For those of you who are having trouble with large capacity disks
under Ultrix...

According to the March 4 Digital News, there are problems with Ultrix
(and VMS versions before v5.4) using disks bigger than a gigabyte.
Ultrix uses the SCSI group 0 command set, which can address disks
up to 1.073742gb. On larger disks, the SCSI driver wraps around the
disk and starts overwriting the disk from the begining. DEC says
that the next release of Ultrix (4.2) will work correctly.

One user found out from Fujitsu, who told him to reformat his
M2266SA disk to a slightly smaller size. Fujitsu also said a
"special partitioning scheme" can solve the problem. There were
no details on the partitioning scheme.
