[comp.unix.ultrix] LAT printers

hubcap@hubcap.clemson.edu (Mike Marshall) (10/18/89)

Hi -

Can anyone shed any light on this problem?

We've got serveral lat attached ln03 printers on our ethernet. They all work
fine from VMS. I've got several of them working fine from ULTRIX... I've just
done exactly what it says to do in "Guide to Ethernet Communication Services".

One in particular just won't work for me. Everytime I try to print anything
there, all I get is another...

/usr/lib/lpd: vaxsys: cannot open /dev/tty45

...in the lf file.

I've got the right stuff in /etc/ttys.
The permissions on /dev/tty45 look the same as those on tty's where other
ln03s are attached.
The printcap entry looks like the ones for printers that work.
I've swapped to other ttys.
I've done the lcp stuff.
I've had the network services guys (the folks here responsible for hardware)
to look into it, they say everything looks fine.
I've danced on one foot while chanting a mantra.

What next?

Thanks for any hints...

Which foot and which mantra? 8-)

You didn't mention how many LAT devices in your config file and whether
it just happens that /dev/tty45 corresponds to a minor number greater
than any other that might work...

Greetings:

Has anyone seen this?...

We have a couple of printers (an ln03 and an lg01) hooked to a terminal
server in a terminal area. The printers work fine when used from the VMS
machines that know about them. They *usually* work fine when used from
the ULTRIX machine (an 8810, ultrix 4.1). However, occasionally, print
jobs from the ultrix machine sort of hang on the printer, and start printing
over and over and over and ...

I believe I have everything set up properly, but would appreciate any ideas
anyone has on what might be causing this.

-Mike

We had the same problem (but with ULTRIX 4.0). The release notes actually
mention this BUG and suggest a work around (which didn't work for me). I tried
adding the following to the printcap entry:

:if=/usr/lib/lpdfilters/xf:

and the problem has gone away.

Larry.

We see this all too frequently...and have no other solution than to
run lpr restart all every now and then.
