Due to peculiarities in some of the software we have here, we have to run our DECstation 5000 PXGs so that our users have to log into the bare console and then start the X server (some software only works if the server is in 8plane mode rather than the usual 24plane). What I would like to do is run some program that will blank the screen when the X server is not running so people don't have to keep turning on and off the monitors (Suns come with such a program). We have one monitor that's getting flakey, probably from being turned on and off all the time. Another option would be to have some Xprompt/xdm-like program that would let users control how the X server is running by restarting it in either 8 or 24 plane mode. I prefer this option, but realize that it's not likely. Any help with this is greatly appreciated!
