[comp.unix.ultrix] YP hung when master dies

brendan@cs.widener.edu (Brendan Kehoe) (04/01/91)

I've got a Sun Sparc as the YP master for a Decstation 3100; the
DecStation's the secondary server for our domain service (or should
be, at least). But I've come across a problem.
When the YP master goes down, the Decstation hangs because of the +
entry in the passwd file to let network users log onto it. You're able
to connect, but that's it .. it forever seeks its master. (cough) I
tried making the Decstation a YP slave, but then when the YP master
came back up, *it* thought the decstation was *its* master and became
the slave itself! Pretty weird!
Any suggestions or ideas are more than welcome .. I'd love to have
the machine accessible (and perform DNS) when the Suns are down.
