[comp.unix.ultrix] DECstn 5000 & 1.2Gb Fujitsu scsi Discs

johnd@physiol.su.oz.au (John Dodson) (04/02/91)

I just got a DECstation 5000 which I tried to put some Fujitsu
1.2Gb SCSI drives onto, the results were less than encouraging...

Trying to install the basic 4.1 Ultrix distribution from a CD-ROM
works up untill it tries to find the drive geometry when the machine hangs.

Trying to do chpt's occassionally works ! & occasionally hangs the machine.

Cables etc. are properly connected !

When the chpt has worked it is possible to mkfs & fsck file systems
but an attempt to the chpt another (fuji 1.2Gb) drive hangs the system.

The drives worked on VaxStn 3100 running VMS.

I know there are problems with Ultrix 4.1 & large (eg 1.2Gb)
but I think that it is more likely to be a drive strapping (configuration)
problem, since I can't even get it to reliably talk to the drives.
Needless to say I have no manuals for the drives (YET !;-)

Anyone who is currently using these drives on a DECStn 5000 PLEASE give
me a clue as to what my problem is.

Thanks

How to get a FUJI 2266 drive to work on a DECstation:

Switch Bank CHN2:
	- open switch 1-2	(make it be SCSI-1/CCS)
	- open switch 11-12	(turn parity off)
	- open switch 15-16	(let host initiate SCSI synch mode)

For some hosts, you may need to also disable the readahead cache
(CHN9), but it seems to work on the DECstation. Bulk transfers (using
dd & 32K blocks) are 1.2Mb/s. The Wren V gets about the same, maybe a
little less. The Fuji has 14.5ms seek time.

Thanks go to Tom Eastman of r^2 systems, the vendor.

What about /sys/scsi_data.c ?
Does it have the entry for these drives ?
If it doesn't, you should better make it.
