I have a PC/AT on my desk at work with a 1.6Mb floppy drive. I understand that it has a mode where it runs at the same motor speed and data speed as an 8" floppy. Also, it has a mode where it runs at the same motor speed and data speed as a 'normal' 5 1/4" floppy. I have also noticed ads for these drives relatively cheap in Computer Shopper. My questions are: 1) Can these drives be run strictly as a DSQD 5 1/4" drive? 2) Can they be run strictly as an 8" drive? (I'm more interested in1 than2, actually.) On a slightly different subject: I would be interested in receiving comments from users on the various 5 1/4" floppy drives available on the surplus market (e.g., advertised in Computer Shopper), especially the DSQD drives. Also the hard disk drives and controllers. Also just comments on your experiences with the various vendors who advertise in Computer Shopper. If there appears to be enough interest I'll summarize all the above to the net. Thanks in advance! -- Dave (Bakin -at mit-multics.arpa)
