[comp.unix.ultrix] Connecting PostScript printer to Dec5000

misha@ninja.csuohio.edu (Misha Rekhson) (06/25/91)

I need help connecting (and configuring Ultrix printing software) a
DECstation5000 Running Ultrix 4.1 to Abaton PostScript laser printer.
(I am planning to connect them via RS232)

The documentation for the DECstation only mentions how to configure
printing software for Dec's PrintServer but doesn't really tell
how to configure it for a 3rd party PostScript printer.

I guess the question boils down to: How to configure
Ultrix printing software to use a general PostScript printer and
Abaton in particular? Please indicate all the drivers/filters/printcap
entries... This will be our only printer...

Also, if we purchase additional Adobe fonts, how would I set it so the
new fonts will be downloaded to the printer?

I can ftp, so if there is info on Internet please point me there.

Please be specific - I am new to the "printing side" of Unix.
Thanks in adavnce - all the help will be greatly appreciated!

The simple answer* is to try running /usr/etc/lprsetup and telling the
program that the printer is a Digital LN03R. This is the nearest equivalent
printer Digital builds. While this obviously won't exploit every feature of
your printer, it should at least give you a starting point. The resulting
/etc/printcap should work.

Oh, you'll probably need a null modem cable to connect the printer to
the computer.
