In the course of getting a simulation project, I need to make a decision about whether to stay with VMS or use Ultrix on my VAXstation 3100. My concern is availability of 3rd party software. When asking vendors whether their product runs under Ultrix, I usually get a 'yes', but when I mention that its on a VAXstation, many vendors say 'no', or 'just barely'. I'm concerned about that class of software that originally existed in the PC world, which is now being ported to the Unix (and hence Ultrix) world. Most of the work seems to be going to the RISC platforms (DECstations, SPARCstations) and Ultrix on the VAXstation seems to be left behind. It seems half the time, if I talk to a vendor and say that I'm running Ultrix, I'll often get screwed if I forget to mention that I'm running on a VAXstation. This is not a VMS vs. Ultrix question, but rather should I bother with Ultrix if I am not running it on a RISC machine. Especially if I'm going to be running wordprocessing/spreadsheet/presentation kinds of software. I'd be open to here any and all gut-level reactions. -James +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | James Peregrino | JPEREGRINO@HBSSTG.HARVARD.EDU | | Programmer/Analyst | PEREGRIN@HULAW1.BITNET | | Science & Technology Interest Group +-----------------------------------+ | Harvard Business School | HBS neither expresses nor implies | | Boston, MA 02163 | any warranty in any of the | | Voice:(617)495-6307 FAX:(617)495-0351 | opinions or alleged facts herein. | +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+
