[comp.sys.encore] Throughput problems with Encore Annex-II

bossert@Thalatta.COM (John Bossert) (04/23/89)

Configuration:

	Encore Multimax 310-XPC / UMAX 4.2-3_3.0
	Annex-II terminal server
	Telebit T-1000 modems

Problem:

When communicating (e.g. via uucp, but not exclusively) with other
sites, we get great throughput while sending to other sites. When
other sites try to send to us, throughput is in the *100* baud range.

This phenomenon occurs regardless of who initiates the call.

The problem also persists using other modems and on direct-connect
	(through Annex/RS-232) to other computers.

Discussion:

Has anyone experience problems like this? Is there a parameter in
the Annex that can be tweaked? Any suggestions would be GREATLY
	appreciated.

Thanks in advance. Please send e-mail and I'll summarize responses.

This problem was not restricted to the Annex-II, nor R3_3 of UMAX. I have
been pushing Encore along with this problem for several months, when R3.2.0
managed to cut off our Trailblazer Plus. A fix was supposedly made with
3.2.1, but the input rate was as you said, around 100 baud. They then said
it wasn't the software at that point. Since then, Xylogics bought the Annex
line from Encore, at Mr. Loverso a few weeks ago pointed out a bug in the
UUCP software, and offered a patch to generic 4.3 UUCP sources. I used the
4.3 sources and the patch, and was successful on the first try. I
congratulate Mr. Loverso on pointing out this bug and offering a fix for a
bug which I had been fighting since the 3.2.0 revision came out.

The bug is not fixed in 3.3.0, but Encore is aware that the bug is THEIRS
now, and should be fixed in the future.

I have no real complaints about Encore. The machines are fast. It's just
their non-acceptance of this problem being within their software which
bothered be.
