We picked up an Encore Multimax for a good price
and we are now thinking about trying to integrate into
our network of mostly Suns. Compared to prices for Suns,
the prices for disk and a Pascal compiler seem pretty steep.
Does anybody have any experience attaching third party disks
to the Encore? Will any embedded SCSI drive work? Any recommendations?
Is there something about the Pascal compiler that makes it
worth more, i.e., is it parallelized (careful not to say
paralyzed :-)), exceptionally fast?
Are there any third party Pascal compilers that somebody
has used on the Encore? Anything like a GNU pascal?
I have been told UMAX 4.3 will have full NFS support,
both server and client sides. My informant did not know
if YP was included. Does anybody know this?

No. It doesn't run in parallel and it isn't exceptionally fast. In theory you will have many more users making use of it than you would on a Sun system. This is the basis of some of the difference in price. If you don't like this price, you'll hate the price of Encore Ada :-) Also, keep in mind that running 10 pascal compiles in parallel will give you some sense of speed. > Are there any third party Pascal compilers that somebody > has used on the Encore?
