[comp.sys.encore] What is this garbage? Or, file system woes.

phil@eecs.nwu.edu (Bill LeFebvre) (07/21/89)

System: multimax 210 running UMAX V4.2.

I've seen file system problems in conjunction with hardware failures, but
this time it "just happened" with no other failures in sight. Here's
what met me this morning:

Fri Jul 21 00:03:00 1989: Bad special file size 1914725486 (inode 33464, type 060000, FS /p0).

Fri Jul 21 00:17:25 1989: Bad special file size 63403122 (inode 26558, type 060000, FS /p3).

So what's the scoop? Are all my large file systems going to fly apart
if I dare to look at them cross-eyed? This machine has only been up
for 3 days. I can't afford to take my machine down once or twice a
week to run fsck. Anyone got a clue?

Such problems are promptly and cheerfully handled by Encore Customer
Service. Their number is 1-800-851-7313. I have forwarded your mail
to customer service, but they can't really take any action until you
call them. It looks like you have a file system or hardware problem,
but no one is going to be able to diagnose let alone correct your
problem via news. Customer service can run diagnostics remotely, and
contacting them is the best way to get your problem fixed quickly.

I have seen that garbage also. Fsck in and of itself will not clean them up.
What you have to do to fix it is use find(1) to locate those inodes and then
delete the files. What version of UMAX 4.2 are you running? I haven't seen
those errors for a couple of versions now, I believe.
