I recently wrote to this group that I was having trouble with the X that comes on the Encore Umax V (2.2F) and an X terminal (in this case it was an NCD 16"). I have now ascertained that there appears to be no fault on the part of the X-terminal. Indeed, I have used, and continue to use a Visual 19" as well. The problem is entirely in the very dodgy software that Encore have distributed. Sure some of the demo's work, however, every bit of software from the net (xdvi, xfig, xbench etc) that I try fails inexplicably. [I have heard of someone who got X up on his own under Umax 4.2 and he says it seems okay.] This note is to let you know that the X terminals are not at fault--- it is Encore's version of X which is woefully inadequate. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Isaac Balbin, Department of Computer Science, ACSNET: isaac@goanna.oz Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, JANET: isaac%goanna.oz.au@uk.ac.ukc GPO BOX 2476 V, ARPA: isaac%goanna.oz.au@uunet.uu.net Melbourne, 3001, CSNET: isaac%goanna.oz.au@australia AUSTRALIA UUCP: ...!uunet!goanna.oz.au!isaac Phone: +61 3 660 2803 BITNET: isaac%goanna.oz.au@relay.cs.net Fax : +61 3 663 2764 EARN: isaac%goanna.oz.au@uk.ac.rl.earn
