[net.news.group] A summary of current proposals

chuqui@cae780.UUCP (12/15/83)

Rummaging through net.news.group recently, I found I couldn't keep track of
the players without a scorecard. Well, here is the scorecard for proposed
groups and ungroups at my site:

net.games.go: I got a number of positive requests for net.games.go as well
as Mike Turner, so I took some initiative and created it. This
    discussion is finally closed.

net.nlang.*: is still up in the air, but looks like it will fail for lack
    of long term interest.

net.biology: looks like there is some support for it, however net.bio and
net.bio.expert do not. I don't think there has been enough interest to
create it yet (start lobbying folks)

net.sources.pc: There is support for this, but I haven't seen very much pc
software in net.sources, so I don't know if there is a need to split it
out. Why not distribute to net.sources until there is enough of a
    volume to justify it?

net.movies.sw: This topic has outlived itself. MY attempt to restructure it
seems to have failed. Methinks it is time to drop it, so unless someone
can change my mind, I will most likely rmgroup it in a week or so.
(net.movies.sw people, come to the rescue if you will!)

net.micro.trs: Lots of positive support. Time to shut up and create the
    thing.

net.origins: Feedback is mixed. Assuming net.biology is created, can't the
various origin discussions be placed in appropriate topics such as
    biology, religion, or flame?

net.tv.drwho: Lots of positive feedback, but I also note that there has
been almost no Dr. Who discussion recently except whether to create the
topic. I don't know that there is enough volume, but its worth a try.

net.eulogy: Dumb topic.

net.people: There is a need for people to leave notes about themselves when
they change jobs or whatever... I don't know if net.people is the
proper place, but unless someone comes up with a better location (I
don't see why net.general couldn't work for now, but we'll see)

There you are folks.... I don't think I missed anything, but if I did, feel
free to let me know (I know you would anyway!!! :->)

Concerning net.sources.pc, a *lot* of yesses have been tallied in
net.micro.pc, and attempts to get them out to here apparently haven't
worked.

About the material for it, it never occured to me to post any IBM pc
sources to net.sources; it just didn't seem *right*. In the group itself,
a lot of software is talked about, that exists in a free library on the
Arpanet, and it is hoped that someone on said net could gateway them
into sources.pc. I could just hear it now if ~100 pc sources got dumped
into net.sources.

Excellent summary. I don't believe net.movies.sw is dead yet,
there has recently been a fair amount of activity. Unless there's
some pressing need to go hacking groups they instant they take
a breather, I suggest we leave it alone until it stays inactive
for, say, a month or more.

I agree that the interest in drwho seems to be waning, but that
may be merely out of consideration by the drwho fans, waiting
for their own group.

How about a net.news.groups.vote, or something similar, where
people could submit yes/no votes, and when the count reached
some specified value (20 more yes votes than no, say), someone
could create the group. With a bit of cleverness, this could
be automated. I realize the name is too long for obsolete
software, but something will have to be done about the 14-char
limit eventually. Perhaps we could make it net.news.poll?

Clearly we need to develop a standard policy to combat this
anarchy (you can see how short a time I've been on the net:-)

P.S. If there are gatewaying problems with ARPA over net.sflovers,
would it be easier to have net.tv.drwho?

Since I am unable to send mail to chuqui, I'm posting this here.
net.movies.sw is NOT dead. There are about 3-4 articles per day recieved
here. If people are using a newsgroup I see no reason to remove it, even
if YOU think it's a dead subject.
