[comp.sys.transputer] Distributed processing for multiple scene generation.

THIS IS FROM : David M. Gagliano (dmg@ADEA-ATT.ARPA)

Anyone out there aware of any work done to generate multiple
3D perspective views in real-time? It would be used in a simulator, where
the user could look out any of 12 windows at any time, and see the appropriate
view for the window.

Seems to me that the only way to achieve something like this with a
reasonable cost is to have multiple low cost scene-generation machines,
such as a PC-bus machine with transputers, duplicated enough times to achive all
12 views in real-time. My definition for real-time here is "flicker-free animation".

If you know of any system out there that might meet these specs, I sure
would appreciate your sending it my way. I can be reached at:

Thanks to all who took the time to read, and a special thank you
	to anyone responding.

The Inmos Multiuser flight simulator does this at more than 20 frames/sec
(each frame is 512*512*8) using a bunch of T800's per user with all the
bunches connected in a ring. You play the game by shooting down the other
three people who are also playing the game.
It is described (with some nice colour pictures) in Inmos technical note 36
"A Transputer Based Multi-user Flight Simulator", by P. Atkin and S. Ghee.

Inmos have had it on the stand at some exhibitions and its great fun to play
as long as Stephen Ghee isn't flying around wiping everyone else out!
