I am looking for information on programs/systems that will allow PC to PC communications plus file transfer capability. We need to develop such a link with Costa Rica. Does anyone know if a 1200 Baud modem will work or should we stick to 300 baud? The type of utility we seek is one similar to 'talk' on Unix plus the file transfer capability similar to Kermit. I realize that Kermit will do some of this but are there others? What about Xmodem? Any help will be appreciated. Steve Tenbrink Arpa: sct@lanl.arpa other: ihnp4!lanl-a!sct cmc12!lanl-a!sct

The machine you have in mind is not mentioned, so I will stay generic. Kermit is available for a variety of micros, as are versions of a comm program called MINITEL. Specific versions for the DEC Rainbow (DECMINI), IBM PC (IBMMINI), Sanyo (SYOMINI) all exist in the public domain. If you are interested in unattended, automatic file transfers, than you should look into using FIDO/FIDONET. This will allow your PCs to transferr messages and files, using a variety of protocols, on a scheduled basis. FIDO/FIDONET is also public domain, and available from a variety of BBS around the country.
