Since there is no dedicated helios newsgroup, I ask my question here: We will port a somewhat big unix program to the ATW, running helios. Now this program was developed on a bsd unix machine, and the source files have rather long names (much longer than the braindead MSDOS style names that the GEMDOS file systems on the ATW support). Helios itself can handle up to 31-char filenames which would be ok for me. Since filesystems are implemented using server processes, it should be possible to write a 'renaming' server that maps the long filenames into short names for storage, and back into long names for dir listings etc. I am currently in the process of writing such a server, but if someone already has written such a beast, I'd appreciate hearing about it.
