You can be sure that the $70 modem is using half-duplex (probably 202-type) formats, not full-duplex 212A formats. Also, the 2400 bps communications are also almost certainly using a wide-deviation half duplex format that bears no relationship to V22. Don't depend on being able to successfully record (on tape) such transmissions--the wow/flutter on many audio tape recorders (particularly cassette machines) can sometimes make even 202 recording difficult, and would be even more of a problem at 2400 bps. --Lauren--
