Here are the findings of my enquiry regarding the relative merits and compatibility of Sun and MSDOS based development environments. It seems that the Transputer Development Toolkit (a.k.a. The Occam 2 toolset) for the Sun and TDS on an MSDOS machine are compatible --- with the caveat that folds will be lost when transferring between systems. TDT does not provide the tight integration of tools as per TDS, but this can be worked around. If you're particularly comfortable with UNIX you may prefer this set up. A Sun version of TDS is available from Transtech (tel. 0494 464303). This is well worth consideration. Transtech claim total compatibility with INMOS TDS and the system is designed to work over NFS. The disadvantage of Transtech TDS over INMOS TDT is that there's no simulation mode so you'll have to have buy a transputer farm. However INMOS express reservation over the viability of simulation for `real' development work so this cost may be unavoidable with TDT also. I still don't have much information on comparative performance, but if you decide on MSDOS TDS you must take into consideration that although TDS run on the transputer it is very hefty on I/O. If you don't have a powerful processor and a fast hard disk the system it's sure to grind.
