A Research Associate is required to work with a project team on a
major  research initiative sponsored by the Economic  and  Social
(ESRC)  and Natural Environment (NERC) Research  Councils  (under
the recent special topic in Geographical Information Systems) and
the Digital Equipment Corporation Limited.   The initiative  will
investigate   the   potential   for   implementing   Geographical
Information   Systems  within   parallel   and   multi-processing
environments.

As  part  of this initiative,   the Department of  Geography  has
established   the  world's  first  Parallel   GIS   Architectures
Laboratory, making this an exciting and challenging opportunity.

The post will be available for two years,  and applicants  should
have  programming experience and ideally should be familiar  with
the  VAX/VMS  environment.   The  successful  candidate  will  be
appointed  on  the lower part of the Research 1B Scale  (#9816  -
#12381). This post is superannuated.
