[comp.sys.transputer] Engineering software

jnv@cl.cam.ac.uk (Neil Viljoen) (03/01/90)

A friend of mine is interested in finite element analysis. He asked me
what finite element systems were available on Transputers as this seemed
a natural application for parallel processing. Now I know that some
company in Wales had something to this effect but I think it was only
for single Transputers. Has anybody got anymore information on this or
other packages?

Does Inmos publish a list of all software developers and packages available ?

The company you mention is Rockfield Software which indeed specialises in
Finite Element analysis software. They are based in Swansea in Wales.

Your suggestion that their software can only utilize single Transputers is
not true. Many of the applications they are working on are ideal for
implementation on 'highly parallel' arrays of Transputers.

They have a number of different software products for the
Transputer and I believe most of the are at lest capable of utilising
multiple processors, although I cannot comment on the licencing restrictions
the number of processors used.

The range of softare products encompass Tranputer Systems hosted by PC's and
Sun workstations. On the PC, they provide uFLOW for flow analysis and uPLAST
for elast-plastic analysia as well as many others. On the Sun workstation
they have developed a Transient Dynamic analysis package using the Transtech
Multi-Computing Platform.

Further information can be obtained direct from Rockfiled at the following address:

Contact Inmos ! They have a database known as the White Pages which provides
information on developers, hardware, and software products which utilise the
Transputer. This should contain the sort of information you want.

The company is Rockfield Software Ltd, The Innovation Centre, University
College of Swansea, Singelton Park, Swansea, SA2 8TP.
Phone (UK) 0792 295551. Fax 0792 295532.
Their software runs on up to 5 transputers; a year ago it was demonstrated on a
Quintek system.

Richard Waite and others from Liverpool University have ported some of
the SERC/NAG Finite Element Subroutine Library to Transputer Systems but
I have not seen any product advertised. Liverpool University phone is
051-709 6022 and the transputer centre there has phone 051-708 5760.

Haydyn Scholes (0209 860141) has ported PAFEC to run on a single
transputer and this is available through Kevin Bradley of Bradley Associates
(0344 761311).

Parsys are said to be in colloboration with FEGS to produce something.

Sorry I can not give E-mail addresses or be more definitive.
